Detailed Description of Western Indigenous Science Experience
This free, public event stresses the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to our daily lives and celebrates Indigenous and Western science.
Join us to engage in a wide variety of engaging science activities that are suitable for all ages. Activities will include talking with Elders about wild foods and remedies, learning about Indigenous astronomy, solving arithmetic problems, creating Aboriginal tools, and much more. Assisting in the demonstration of the activities will be Indigenous Elders and student leaders from the National Indigenous Science Education Program.
A traditional smoking ceremony and ceremonial greeting will kick off the event (10 am). Additionally, there will be a chance to buy food and indigenous arts and crafts.
The occasion falls during National Science Week. It is sponsored by Redfern Community Center and organized by Macquarie University’s National Indigenous Science Education Program. It is made possible through Inspiring Australia’s assistance and grants provided by the Australian government.
